I've had it ^ to here!!!
Okay, so I went to a party yesterday. Not the wisest decision because it was WACK...lol.. But I wanted to go out with some friends and just relax. At this party I saw the most horrible display of women I have seen thus far in Bloomington Normal. These young women were dressed as if they were going to perform at the local strip club. Black women and other women of color are always portrayed as wild and are usually oversexed. With that being said, they should be really cautious of how they portray themselves. I am not avid about a woman wanting to be and feel "sexy" and sometimes show a little bit of skin, but people need to understand where the line needs to be drawn. This reminds me of the article we read "I Met a Latin Girl named Maria", she talked about how she would always be portray a certain way regardless of how she dressed or acted. Because she was Latina she was always seen as sexy or provocative. We see examples of this everyday when we turn on our televisions and catch the latest rumpshaking videos. The women of color in the videos are to referred to as Video Vixen s or video Hoes, but when White women are in the video are called Video Models. If they are in the same videos doing the same degrading actions then why are two different terms used for women of color and White women. It is obvious that one term is more respectful and "sounds" better, so why not use Video Model for both?

I agree with you. I think it's ridiculous to separate women into two different categories of class (or lack thereof) based on skin color. I also agree in that I hate seeing women of ANY color dressed like that. I think it's just fine to show some skin and be sexy, as you said. But when it crosses the line, it's just giving a bad reputation to women in general. However, it's sad that White women can get away with it and be alright, but Black women (or any woman of color, really) automatically represents the stereotype from a rap video or whatever. Sometimes I want to walk up to women who are dressed distastefully and tell them, "Hey, you're pretty how you are, you don't need to be wearing that." But what can you do?
I'm right with you on this one Brittany. It pains me to see so many beautiful young ladies dressed like strippers, simply because they believe that's the way to get attention from men. Yeah, you'll get his attention, but not his RESPECT. I feel so OLD sometimes (Bianca and I just had this conversation), because I'm just looking at the madness, and I'm like...really? Really?! Does your right nipple really need to be out to show how sexy you are? Sexiness comes from self-confidence, self-respect, and self-love, not your ability to show as much skin as possible. Grr. It makes me sad to see these young women trying so HARD to get love/attention they need in all the wrong ways. Sorry for the rant, lol=o)
This blog post reminded me of the media presentation that you did during the course of the semester. I think that the way women dress is a catch 22, but I think this idea more strongly applies to black women. One of the reasons for this kind of inappropriate behavior and apparel is because of shows such as Flavor of Love exist. Although Flavor of Love did have some white women on the show, the majority were black. And during that show the women would back stab and have no problem getting into bed on the first night. Well, if girls grow up watching shows like these and think that that is how life is, there can be some major problems. I think that the media needs to readdress what message it is sending to young girls and women. Right now, through various magazine and television ads and definitely in some shows, the media is telling girls that it is ok to dress inappropriately slutty. They give the idea that clothes, or lack there of, that scream sex are cool and attractive. I wish that someone would sit the girls down and explain that they are causing people to look negatively upon their race and sex.
